About

Our Story

North American Rectifiers (NAR) was originally founded in 1965 as Thyristor Devices Ltd. by Hugh Neames, a successful plater and an engineering graduate from University of Toronto. Mr. Neames understood the challenges of platers and set out to engineer and develop a rectifier designed for the plating industry. His rectifiers quickly became mainstream and the preferred power work horse for platers across North America. Those who used the equipment standardized their plants with these Canadian built rectifiers as they proved to be incredibly reliable and robust; and these customers continue to purchase from us today.

Over the years Thyristor Devices Ltd. changed hands and in the 90s its identity became known as North American Rectifiers. NAR continued the strong legacy by maintaining the base platform and design principals that made it a success, while constantly evolving through innovative advancements in design, internal components and controls/communications that align with NAR users and new customers’ primary essential needs…Reliable Power!

NAR manufactures silicon-control rectifiers (SCRs) that are custom made to the specifications of each customer’s application. With 60 years of operational success, NAR is the leader in convection and air-cooled rectifiers, which eliminates the cost and maintenance associated with water cooling systems.

At NAR, we understand that every industry and application has its unique challenges, which is why we don’t just deliver reliable power solutions—we partner with our customers to offer strategic guidance throughout the lifecycle of their projects. With decades of experience in the plating and finishing industries, we leverage our deep technical expertise to help our customers optimize their processes, reduce operational risks, and enhance efficiency. From custom rectifier designs to tailored upgrades and modifications, NAR goes beyond the role of a manufacturer to ensure that each of our customer’s power systems not only meets their needs today but is also prepared to adapt to future demands. Our goal is to deliver value at every stage, ensuring that our customers make informed decisions that align with both their immediate and long-term goals.

What’s more? NAR and its affiliated companies make it a one-stop shop for parts and service—control boards, diodes, custom transformers, fuses, fans, etc. Or if you’re looking to modify or upgrade your NAR rectifier, the NAR team can configure a custom solution for your specific application.

As the finishing industry’s best kept secret, NAR is continually building momentum and moving forward as an international brand with distributors across Canada, the US, and Europe.

Plating Electronic-Power Supply Leaders Since 1987

Plating Electronic was founded in 1987 with the aim of developing and producing linearly regulated desktop rectifiers and compact rectifiers using switch mode technology. Today, more than 100 people work at plating electronic and its partner companies, developing sophisticated solutions for demanding power supplies in industrial and scientific electrochemical processes. From electroplating to surface treatment of aluminum (anodizing), from cathodic dip coating (E-coating) to electrolytic water treatment, customers choose plating electronic switch mode rectifiers to ensure their system, and therefore their business, runs smoothly.
